World Soundtrack Academy announces Discovery Of The Year 2010
Every year the advisory board of the World Soundtrack Academy chooses a ‘Discovery of the Year’ to celebrate emerging film composing talent. Famous composers as Klaus Badelt, Antonio Pinto, Craig Armstrong, Michael Giacchino, Gustavo Santaolalla and last year’s Nico Muhly were discovered by the board.

For the past 25 years, the 6’ 5” actor has been part of the fabric of popular culture as An Oscar winning movie star (Bull Durham, The Player, Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River), writer & director (Dead Man Walking, Cradle Will Rock, Bob Roberts), philanthropist and political activist (Robbins was amongst America's most vocal opponents of the Iraq war). But there is a side to Robbins rarely seen until now. With the release of his strange and rather wonderful debut album, ' Tim Robbins & The Rogues Gallery Band’, he reveals himself to be a gifted singer-songwriter in the American narrative tradition. Produced by maverick genius Hal Willner, Robbins’ belated musical debut somehow brings all the strands of his creative life together. Because whether it is through the mediums of acting, writing, directing or singing a song, Tim Robbins has always been, at heart, a story teller.

World Soundtrack Awards Announces 2010 Nominees
The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the list of its nominees for the 2010 Awards to be presented in three categories: Film Composer of the Year, Best Original Score of the Year and Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film. The names of the winners will be announced at the World Soundtrack Awards 10th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, October 23, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival.

Film Festival Ghent celebrates 10th anniversary World Soundtrack Awards
The World Soundtrack Awards, an awards presentation honoring the best in film music established by the Ghent International Film Festival’s World Soundtrack Academy in 2001, has announced an all star line up to usher in its 10th year. Ten world class composers will be appearing live in concert at the awards presentation in Ghent, Belgium on October 23rd. Those confirmed include Oscar winners Howard Shore (Lord Of The Rings), Elliot Goldenthal (Titus), Gabriel Yared (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries), Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare In Love) as well as Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks), Craig Armstrong (Love Actually), Alberto Iglesias (Volver), Bruno Coulais (Océans), Frédéric Devreese (Un Soir, Un Train) and brilliant young composer Nico Muhly (The Reader)

Registrations Ghent Film Festival composition competition opened
The annual composition competition organised by the Ghent Film Festival with the support of SABAM kicks off once again. Young European film music composers are given the chance to compete for the prize of 2,500 Euros. In addition, they can have their composition performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic – the Flemish Radio Orchestra during the presentation of the World Soundtrack Awards on 23 October. This is the official closing event of the 37th Ghent Film Festival (12-23 October 2010). Applicants can register up to and including 30 June 2010.

Film Music Legend, John Barry, In Concert At The Ghent Film Festival
Barry receives the Lifetime Achievement Award World Soundtrack Academy
On Thursday October 21, 2010 five-time Oscar winner, John Barry’s music will be performed live in concert at the Ghent International Film Festival. This unique, one-night-only event will be held at 8.30 pm at ‘t Kuipke Concert Hall in Ghent. The 80 members Brussels Philharmonic will be performing selections from many of Barry’s classic scores including Goldfinger, Mary Queen of Scots, Out of Africa, Dances with Wolves and Midnight Cowboy, conducted by Nicholas Dodd. As always, the concert will be accompanied by a video presentation of film clips.

Giacchino wins his first Oscar for 'Up'
Michael Giacchino won his first Academy Award last night. The Oscar for ‘Best Original Score’ went to his widely acclaimed score for the Pixar hit Up, a score that previously has been awarded the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and a Grammy among many other honours. Giacchino spoke about the dream coming true in his acceptance speech, saying to the “kid out there who do not have a support system” that “if you want to be creative, go out there and do it. It is not a waste of time.” In 2004 Giacchino was named 'Discovery Of The Year' at The World Soundtrack Awards for his score for another Pixar movie The Incredibles.

IFMCA awards Michael Giacchino's UP for Best Score 2009
Michael Giacchino wins the 2009 Score of the Year award from the International Film Music Critics Association for his inventive and nostalgic score for the Disney Pixar film, UP, which also wins Best Original Score for an Animated Feature. Giacchino receives a total of four awards, including Composer of the Year, in part for also writing the Best Original Score to a Fantasy/Science Fiction Feature winner for the JJ Abrams STAR TREK reboot. Giacchino won the Association’s first Score of the Year award in 2004 for THE INCREDIBLES, another Pixar film. For this music he also received the award for Discovery of the Year at the World Soundtrack Awards in Ghent.

63 Songs Set To Compete For Oscar
Sixty-three songs have been deemed eligible for contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 82nd Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today. The most notable exclusion was Mary J. Blige’s “I Can See in Color,” from “Precious,” which many saw as having a fair chance at a nomination.
